The Meeting Between Top Crypto Executives and Democrats
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from the Democratic Party presided over the discussion. The talks centered on advancing the pending crypto legislation in the US following its stagnation in the legislature.
Sources like Coinbase claimed that over 10 lawmakers attended the meeting. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has been critical of the crypto industry, didn’t participate in the event.
Tensions reportedly flared as some Democratic senators reacted to the recently leaked documents containing their proposals on decentralized finance (DeFi) regulations. These centered on federal regulators’ enforcement of full-risk management programs, regular stress tests, and comprehensive audits on platforms operating in the space.
The move aimed to safeguard the industry against market manipulation, fraud, sanction evasion, money laundering, and other illegal activities. Besides the burdensome requirements, it pushed for the classification of DeFi protocol deployers as intermediaries, which earned the ire of the Web3 and crypto community.
The Democrats’ frustration led to one senator telling the crypto senior executives to avoid becoming a tool for the Republican Party, based on a related report on The Block. Nonetheless, Chainlink CEO and co-founder Sergey Nazarov considered the meeting productive.
Crypto Gets ‘Significant Support’ From Democratic Party Senators
Nazarov highlighted that the crypto industry has “a sufficient level” of support from Democrat lawmakers. In addition, he confirmed that the group “invested their time and effort in making the bill a success.”
Solana Policy Institute President Kristin Smith echoed the same sentiment, calling the discussion a “necessary step at this time.” Moreover, she assured that the pro-crypto Democrats expressed their commitment to “going deeper and working to get this right.”
However, Smith noted that the Democratic Party senators were concerned about the illicit finance plaguing the industry. They also criticized the family of US President Donald Trump’s strong involvement in the sector, which many see as a potential conflict of interest.
